So, music gush.
Today my adoration goes out to Whitey (real name Nathan Joseph White) a purveyor of edgy electro rock. I stumbled across his ‘Leave Them All Behind’ E.P. a few years back and his various E.P.s and albums have been top of my playlist ever since.
Not only is Whitey an insanely talented musician, churning out filthy baselines and infectious guitar licks that put many of his contemporaries’ efforts to shame, but he also possesses a caustic wit and razor intelligence that is ever present in his lyrics. There is a tone of voice to Whitey’s work that just sits well with me: sometimes cynical, often disgruntled, definitely ‘against the grain’, but also full of punch, humour and real insight.
The thing that is most admirable about this guy, and an inspiration to me as an artist and aspiring writer, is the fact that he is doing it all by himself. Disillusioned with the greed of the big record companies, he’s gone it alone, producing and marketing his own albums, using awesome sites like Bandcamp to get his work heard. He’s a true Indie, but rather satisfyingly his work is still reaching the masses, having been featured on popular shows like the Sopranos, House, One Tree Hill, The O.C., Entourage, CSI and most recently Breaking Bad (a marriage made in heaven in my mind!) He’s also remixed tracks for the likes of Bloc Party, Cut Copy and Chromeo. Just shows that you don’t need a huge record company (or publishing house) behind you to get your voice heard. Just hard work and determination – of course in Whitey’s case, a huge amount of talent has also helped!
So, if you want something with some real nuts rather than vo-coded meh, then I think a visit to Whitey’s Bandcamp page is definitely in order.
His new album ‘Lost Summer’ is a total stormer but dip into any of them and I’m sure you’ll be impressed.
